1. Overview
Business Shine Service is committed to providing a safe, healthy, and smoke-free environment for all employees, clients, contractors, and visitors.
In line with the Smoke-free Environments and Regulated Products Act 1990 (NZ) and other relevant health and safety obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, this policy aims to eliminate health risks associated with smoking (including vaping) in the workplace and while working on client premises.
2. Policy Statement
Smoking, including tobacco products, electronic cigarettes (vapes), herbal cigarettes, and other regulated nicotine delivery systems, is prohibited:
- In all indoor or enclosed company workplaces (e.g. offices, storerooms, kitchens, bathrooms, meeting rooms)
- In all company vehicles and mobile plant (e.g. vans, cleaning carts)
- On client premises, unless designated smoking areas are explicitly provided and authorised for use
- In or near chemical storage areas or other fire hazard zones
- Within smoke-free perimeters required by law (e.g. 6 metres from building entrances, air vents, windows)
This policy applies to all employees, contractors, clients, and visitors at any time during work-related activities.
3. Definitions
- Smoking: The act of inhaling, exhaling, holding, or possessing any lighted or heated tobacco or nicotine product.
- Vaping: Using an electronic cigarette or other device that produces vapour for inhalation.
- Enclosed workplace: A work area that is fully or substantially enclosed by walls and a roof, regardless of whether the doors, windows, or other openings are open or closed.

5. Signage
"No Smoking / No Vaping" signage will be clearly displayed in:
- Enclosed workplaces
- Company vehicles
- Areas with flammable substances
- Other high-risk or sensitive locations
Business Shine Service will also follow any client-specific signage or smoke-free protocols while working at their premises.
6. Disciplinary Action
Failure to comply with this policy may result in disciplinary measures, including but not limited to:
- Verbal or written warnings
- Removal from client sites
- Termination of employment or contract in cases of repeated or serious breaches
Disciplinary action will follow the Business Shine Service's standard Employee Conduct and Disciplinary Procedure.
7. Support for Smokers
Staff who wish to stop smoking or vaping will be supported with information and referral to smoking cessation services such as:
- Quitline New Zealand (0800 778 778 or www.quit.org.nz)
- Healthline or local public health units
8. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner if:
- Legislation changes
- There are changes to company operations
- Issues arise from complaints or non-compliance
