1. Purpose

This policy outlines infection prevention and control procedures to ensure the health and safety of all Business Shine Service employees, contractors, clients, and the public. It is designed to reduce the risk of exposure to infectious agents such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C, COVID 19, gastrointestinal viruses, and other communicable diseases.

2. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All employees (including part-time, full-time, and contractors)
  • All Business Shine Service worksites and client premises
  • All situations involving potential exposure to infectious agents (e.g. contact with blood, bodily fluids, contaminated surfaces or waste)

3. Legislative & Industry Standards

This policy is compliant with:

  • Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (NZ)
  • WorkSafe NZ Guidelines
  • Ministry of Health NZ: Infection Prevention and Control
  • First Aid in the Workplace – WorkSafe NZ
  • Australian NOHSC:2010 (2003) for managing exposure to bloodborne viruses (where relevant guidance lacks in NZ)
  • SafeWork Australia's First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice 2019 (used for reference)

4. Infection Risk Identification

Infection risks in the commercial cleaning environment include:

  • Exposure to blood, vomit, urine, feces or other bodily fluids
  • Contact with contaminated surfaces or waste
  • Cross-contamination from equipment and cleaning tools
  • Poor hand hygiene or incorrect PPE usage

5. Preventative Measures

a) Vaccinations

  • Workers at risk (especially those handling bodily fluids) will be offered vaccination (e.g. Hepatitis B, Influenza, COVID-19 if applicable).
  • Vaccinations are voluntary and free where possible.

b) Safe Work Practices

All staff must follow approved safe work practices including:

  • Hand hygiene before and after tasks
  • Using correct cleaning and disinfecting procedures
  • Safe handling and disposal of waste
  • Isolation of contaminated areas if required

c) Use of PPE

  • PPE such as gloves, masks, aprons, and eye protection will be provided.
  • Staff will be trained on correct donning, doffing, and disposal of PPE.
  • Reusable PPE (e.g. goggles) must be cleaned after use.

d) First Aid Compliance

All cleaning vehicles or on-site kits will comply with:

  • WorkSafe NZ First Aid in the Workplace Guidelines
  • Kits will be checked monthly for expiry, completeness, and cleanliness

6. Incident Reporting Protocol

a) Immediate Notification

  • All exposure or near-miss incidents (e.g. needle-stick injury, splash exposure) must be reported to management immediately.

b) Documentation

  • An Incident/Accident Report Form must be completed on the same day.
  • The report will be confidential and stored securely.

c) Post-Incident Support

  • Workers will be referred to medical or support services for testing, treatment, or counselling as appropriate.

7. Training and Awareness

a) Induction and Ongoing Training

  • All new staff will receive infection control training during onboarding.
  • Annual refresher training will be provided on:
    • Bloodborne virus transmission and control
    • Cleaning standards and hygiene procedures
    • Proper PPE use
    • Safe incident response

b) Access to Information

  • Staff will be given current information about infectious diseases (HIV, Hepatitis, COVID-19, etc.) and infection control procedures.
  • Updates will be shared promptly during any outbreak or health advisory.

8. Review and Monitoring

a) Annual Review

  • This policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner if:
    • There is a significant infection event
    • Legislation or guidance changes
    • Staff or client feedback indicates a need

b) Compliance Monitoring

  • Supervisors will conduct regular checks to ensure:
    • Correct PPE use
    • Safe cleaning practices
    • Reporting of hazards or incidents
  • Non-compliance will be addressed with corrective training.

9. Employee Responsibilities

Employees must:

  • Follow all infection control procedures and instructions
  • Use PPE and cleaning products as trained
  • Report any hazard, incident, or unsafe practice
  • Stay away from work if unwell and notify management

10. Management Responsibilities

Management will:

  • Ensure availability of PPE, disinfectants, and hygiene products
  • Maintain and update this policy
  • Provide support to staff following any exposure incident
  • Promote a safe and informed work environment
